Prodigal Summer

Prodigal Summer: A Novel Prodigal Summer: A Novel by Barbara Kingsolver

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Three stories which intertwine and eventually end up meeting. This is a re-read for me and I liked it even better the second time. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars. That said, Kingsolver definitely has an 'Agenda' and wants to educate you. It's good when you agree with it, as I mostly do in this book, but when you don't it's a little unsettling.

Vineyard Chill

Vineyard Chill: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery Vineyard Chill: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery by Philip R. Craig

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
I enjoy his laid back, gentle writing. Also the descriptions of Marthas Vineyard make me nostalgic for the summers we spent at Cape Cod. Very similar places. I was saddened to see in the acknowledgements written by his wife Shirley, that he passed away in May of 2007. So ends the Vineyard series.

The Madonnas of Leningrad

The Madonnas of Leningrad: A Novel (P.S.) The Madonnas of Leningrad: A Novel by Debra Dean

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Siege of Leningran; Art of the Hermitage - Alzheimers. Alternated between the seige of Leningrad and the present day. The main character worked at the Hermitage during World War II, and in the present time was succumbing to Alzheimers. Hard to read at times, but I loved the descriptions of the paintings in the Hermitage. You can see the paintings online at http://www.hermitagemuseum.org...

Movie Review - Fahrenheit 451

This movie had most of the elements of the book (except for the dog), only re-arranged. I liked the ending better. That said, I'm not much of a Truffaut fan.  I gave it 3 stars.

Ratatouille

We went to the Community Market this morning and got stuff for Ratatouille, amonst other things.

1/3 cup olive oil
2 cloves garlic, crushed and minced
1 large yellow onion, sliced
2 zucchini, thinly sliced
1 small eggplant, thinly sliced
2 green or red peppers, seeded
-- and sliced
5 ripe tomato, seeded
-- and chopped
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Cook all well. Serve with red wine vinegar or lemon juice. Can also be served over Couscous. May Add capers, olives, feta cheese.

Interesting, informative and perceptive, told with a great deal of humor. I loved this book! I had to find a recipe for General Tso's chicken after I read the chapter on it in the book. We had it for supper last night!

Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451 Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
Makes me recall the mindset of the early '50s. Of the future world predicitons: some are pretty close (ear buds), others pretty naive. I love his writing, though, 'Dandelion Wine' is still my favorite.
